Some parks, including Yellowstone, have increased their staff this year. But with low staffing levels at other parks unlikely to meaningfully improve this year, Kym Hall, a former NPS regional director and park superintendent, told CNN she worries park rangers and other staff could hit a breaking point later this summer.
“By mid-August, you’re going to have staff that is so burned out,” Hall said. “Somebody is going to make a mistake, somebody is going to get hurt. Or you’re going to see visitors engaging with wildlife in a way that they shouldn’t, because there aren’t enough people out in the parks to say, ‘do not get that close to a grizzly bear that’s on the side of the road; that’s a terrible idea.’”

The National Park Service did not respond to CNN’s request for comment on its staffing levels.

Meanwhile, visitors are arriving in droves. Last year set a new record for recreation visits at nearly 332 million, smashing the previous record set in 2016.

Hall said the process of hiring thousands of seasonal workers for the summer takes months, typically starting in the previous fall or winter to fully staff up.

“Even if the parks had permission, and even if they had some funding, it takes months and months to get a crew of seasonal (workers) recruited, vetted, hired, boarded into their duty stations, trained and ready to serve the public by Memorial Day,” Hall said.

Compounding the staffing issue is the fact that many park superintendents, some of whom oversee the most iconic parks like Yosemite, have retired or taken the Trump administration’s deferred resignation offers. That leaves over 100 parks without their chief supervisor, Brengel said.

And amid the staff losses, staffers normally assigned to park programming, construction, and trail maintenance, as well as a cadre of park scientists, have been reassigned to visitor services to keep up with the summer season.

Colin Goodson knows more about energy than most people.

The tall, bearded Mainer is an engineer on an offshore oil drilling ship in the Gulf of Mexico. But when it came time for him to build a home in Southern Maine, Goodson largely bypassed fossil fuels.

The house he built is entirely off the grid, powered from rooftop solar and batteries that convert the sun’s energy to electricity. Electrons power much of his two-story home; it is heated and cooled with heat pumps, and Goodson and his wife cook meals on an induction range. Incredibly well-insulated, the entire home is heated by a small wood stove.

Goodson loves his new house, even though it has raised the eyebrows of his drilling ship colleagues.

“All the guys at work think I’m crazy,” Goodson said during a recent tour of his home. “They think I’m living in a shack out in the woods somewhere and I go outside to use the toilet, but that’s clearly not the case.”

The house, built by New Hampshire company Unity Homes, is a far cry from a shack. Modern and spacious, it has running water and three bathrooms.
Despite also having initial concerns about her husband’s off-the-grid aspirations, Katie Goodson is a convert as well – especially after the lights stayed on during an intense storm that knocked their neighbors’ electricity out.

“I would never go back,” she told CNN. “When I tell co-workers or neighbors that we live off-grid and they see the house, they’re always like, ‘Whoa, this isn’t what I was expecting!’ It’s really fun surprising people; I live a totally normal life.”

The Goodsons are part of a small but growing number of homeowners who are choosing to build energy-efficient “panelized” homes that are pre-made in a factory. The homes are better for the climate, and although they have a high upfront cost, several homeowners say their energy savings, quality of life and overall cost of living has greatly improved since moving in.

India will issue tourist visas for Chinese citizens for the first time in five years, allowing nationals from its neighboring country to freely visit each other, marking a significant reset in relations after a deadly border clash sent ties into a deep freeze.

From Thursday, July 24, Chinese citizens can apply for tourist visas to India, the Indian embassy in Beijing said Wednesday.

This “positive news” is in the “common interests of all parties,” China’s foreign spokesperson Guo Jiakun said. “China is willing to maintain communication and consultation with India to continuously improve the level of facilitation of personnel exchanges between the two countries.”

There has been a gradual normalization of ties between India and China in recent months after relations were deeply strained in June 2020, when a brutal hand-to-hand battle in the Galwan Valley left at least 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers dead.

Both nations maintain a heavy military presence along their 2,100-mile (3,379-kilometer) de facto border, known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC) – a boundary that remains undefined and has been a persistent source of friction since their bloody 1962 war.

The 2020 clash in the disputed region between Indian Ladakh and Chinese-controlled Aksai Chin marked the first deadly confrontation along India and China’s disputed border in more than 40 years.

An example provided by Irwin at Dartmouth College points to one plausible explanation — and it has to do with the steeper cost of imported goods.

A study by the Federal Reserve Board found that a rise in input costs resulting from US tariff hikes in 2018-19 led to job losses in American manufacturing. The damage from those higher expenses was compounded by retaliatory taxes on US exports, more than offsetting a small boost to manufacturing employment from US tariffs — at least so far, the 2024 paper said.

Retaliation by other countries is indeed another danger of pulling the tariff lever. Higher tariffs on American exports would typically raise their prices for foreign consumers, hitting demand for the goods in many cases.

When Trump announced new tariffs this year, America’s major trading partners were quick to strike back with their own levies, although the US then agreed a temporary truce with China and the European Union.

Costs of free trade
While economists generally agree that free trade has benefited the global economy in recent decades, they acknowledge that it comes with certain costs.

One is the loss of jobs in communities that are particularly exposed to new competition from foreign manufacturers.

That is similar to the impact of technological progress on workers. “Manufacturing jobs as a share of the labor force have come down everywhere. It isn’t a US-specific story,” said Gimber at JPMorgan Asset Management, pointing to automation.

He drew a parallel between helping workers affected by higher imports and what is known as a just transition — the idea that the drastic changes needed to move toward a greener economy should be fair to everyone and minimize harm to workers and communities.

In both cases, providing workers in impacted industries with new skills or retraining them could be key, Gimber said.

Another potential cost of free trade is dependency on far-flung manufacturers. That took on new relevance during the pandemic, which snarled global supply chains, contributing to shortages of products such as face masks and respirators in the US and elsewhere.

However, economists do not typically see tariffs as a good way to build up domestic manufacturing, Fatas at INSEAD said, noting that subsidies for specific industries are viewed as a better tool “because they work more directly.”

But perhaps the strongest argument in favor of free trade is its importance to maintaining peace between nations.

As Gimber’s colleague David Kelly noted in March, closer trade relations give countries more to lose in any conflict.

Как рассказали протоколирующие заседания адвокаты, Голубев сообщил, что еще до событий начала 2022 года — активной фазы расследования уголовного дела, вышел из компании "Гермес", а также написал нотариально заверенное заявление о выходе из кооператива "Бест Вей". Из "Гермеса" получил через деньги через схему p2p — так, мол, консультант "Гермеса" ему рекомендовал, "чтобы не платить комиссию". При выводе средств Голубев получил больше, чем ранее положил на счет. Голубев решил выйти также из кооператива, так как написал заявление — но деньги получил из-за ареста счетов только в этом году. Предъявляет претензии к тому, что денег пришлось ждать три года, хотя они не выплачивались из-за ареста счетов и позиции следствия и прокуратуры, состоящей в том, что выплаты должны быть запрещены даже пайщикам, выходящим из кооператива: арест счета — не препятствие для таких выплат, если оно санкционировано следствием и прокуратурой. Голубев при этом требует вернуть вступительный и членские взносы, так как "кооператив нарушил условия соглашения". При этом изначально ему был присвоен статус потерпевшего, в суде же он выступал уже в статусе свидетеля. Таких "потерпевших", как Голубев, немало, отмечают адвокаты: так, одна из пайщиц на недавнем заседании обвинила кооператив в том, что он ей не выплатил средства по заявлению о выходе, в то время как она сама систематически отказывается подтвердить реквизиты для перечисления средств, получает письма из кооператива, отправляет уведомления о прочтении, но не отвечает на них. Состоялось долгожданное разбирательство по апелляционному представлению Прокуратуры Санкт-Петербурга на решение Приморского районного суда Санкт-Петербурга полностью снять арест с одного из трех счетов кооператива, на которых почти 4 млрд рублей. Сейчас кооператив распоряжается только вновь поступившими на эти счета средствами — за счет этих средств происходят выплаты пайщикам, написавшим заявление о выходе из кооператива, при этом темп выплат крайне низкий из-за проверок каждого платежа Росфинмониторингом и банками. Кроме того, по решению суда происходят выплаты с арестованных средств по исполнительным листам тем пайщикам, кто решил не ждать выплат, а предъявил и выиграл иски к кооперативу о возврате средств, а также налогов кооператива и зарплаты его персоналу. Кооператив ходатайствовал перед судом о полном снятии ареста с одного из счетов кооператива — самых маленьких, в банке ПСБ, на более чем 600 млн рублей, чтобы гарантированно рассчитаться со всеми примерно 2000 пайщиков, которые подали заявление о выходе из кооператива, — не зависеть от возвратных платежей в кооператив, которые из-за ареста счетов были затруднены и сейчас осуществляются с задержками — с которыми кооператив борется, но быстро эти платежи в нужном объеме вряд ли сможет получить. Решение суда первой инстанции о снятии ареста было в апреле, назначение рассмотрения апелляции в Санкт-Петербургском городском суде крайне затянулось из-за того, что прокуратура добавила к основному апелляционному представлению дополнительное — рассмотрение состоялось только в начале июля. При этом уже в самом заседании прокуратура добавила новые доводы, заявив, что в реестре выплат, представленном кооперативом еще в начале 2025 года, из 773 строк по пайщикам, которым произведены выплаты, имеются 14 строк, в которых фигурирует один из подсудимых — Выдрин, а также 13 лиц, которые назывались лицами, признанными потерпевшими, в рамках уголовного процесса как лица, которым передавались деньги для компании "Гермес". Прокуратуру возмутило то, что лица, которые, возможно, виновны в хищениях, получили средства раньше лиц, признанных потерпевшими. При этом Выдрин написал заявление о выходе из кооператива еще до того, как был привлечен в уголовное дело, и ни на какие его активы арест не накладывался. Санкт-Петербургский городской суд согласился с доводами прокуратуры, отменив решение суда первой инстанции в части снятия ареста со счета — при этом он не подверг сомнению тезис, на котором было основано это решение Приморского районного суда: несоразмерность общей суммы ущерба в уголовном деле — 282 млн рублей и общей суммы арестованных средств только кооператива как гражданского ответчика по данному уголовному делу — почти 4 млрд рублей (при этом есть еще аресты средств других лиц). В самом конце июля Приморским районным судом будет уже рассматриваться продление или непродление арестов средств на счетах на новый трехмесячный срок — и кооператив опять будет ходатайствовать о снятии ареста со счета в банке ПСБ. В Приморском районном суде началось также новое гражданское дело — по иску пайщицы кооператива Дорониной к пайщику кооператива, объявляющему себя его альтернативным председателем, Георгию Моисееву, ранее активисту кооператива и координатору программы по проведению региональных митингов в поддержку кооператива. Судебное разбирательство по существу начнется в сентябре, судья потребовал от представителей Моисеева представить первичные документы о якобы проведенном (без решения совета кооператива) голосовании по выборам новых уполномоченных, так как его юрист сообщил, что документы — на кооперативных участках. Председателям самочинных комиссий по перевыборам, якобы прошедшим весной на 13 из 14 кооперативных участков, придется представить первичные документы, бюллетени для голосования, при этом общее число голосовавших должно быть не менее 7,5 тыс., так как в кооперативе — 15 тыс. пайщиков. (На одном из участков — кооперативном участке (КУ) № 7: иркутско-бурятско-забайкальском — группа Моисеева проводить голосование не решилась, так как еще в начале года одна из пайщиц подала против Моисеева иск о незаконных действиях в иркутский суд, который сейчас активно рассматривается.) В суд с первичными документами, как подчеркивают адвокаты, придется явиться председателям "комиссий по проведению голосований на кооперативных участках": на КУ № 1 — Атрохиной Н. Rescuers are hailing as a “four-legged hero” a furry Chihuahua whose pacing atop an Alpine rock helped a helicopter crew find its owner, who had fallen into a crevasse on a Swiss glacier nearby.

The man, who was not identified, was exploring the Fee Glacier in southern Switzerland on Friday when he broke through a snow bridge and fell nearly 8 meters (about 26 feet), according to Air Zermatt, a rescue, training and transport company.

Equipped with a walkie-talkie, the man connected with a person nearby who relayed the accident to emergency services. But the exact location was unknown. After about a half-hour search, the pacing pooch caught the eye of a rescue team member.

As the crew zeroed on the Chihuahua, the hole the man fell into became more visible. Rescuers rappelled down, rescued the man and flew him and his canine companion to a hospital.

“Imagine if the dog wasn’t there,” Air Zermatt spokesman Bruno Kalbermatten said by phone. “I have no idea what would happen to this guy. I think he wouldn’t survive this fall into the crevasse.”

On its website, the company was effusive: “The dog is a four-legged hero who may have saved his master’s life in a life-threatening situation.”

Two planes nearly collided on the runway in Mexico City on Monday, as an AeroMexico regional jet coming in for landing flew over and touched down in front of a Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 jet already beginning to take off.

Delta Flight 590 was starting to roll down the runway at Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juarez with 144 customers and six crew members on board when the pilots saw another plane land directly in front of it, the airline said in a statement.

Flight tracking website Flightradar 24 shows AeroMexico Connect flight 1631, an Embraer 190 regional jet, flew less than 200 feet over the moving Delta plane then landed in front of them on runway 5R.

The pilots stopped the takeoff and returned to the terminal. The plane eventually took off on its flight to Atlanta about three hours late.

Delta said it reported the incident to Mexican aviation authorities, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board in the United States.

“Delta will fully cooperate with authorities as the circumstances around this flight are investigated,” the airline said in a statement. “We appreciate the flight crew’s actions to maintain situational awareness and act quickly – part of Delta’s extensive training.”

AeroMexico and the Mexican civil aviation authority did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment.

Mexico’s aviation safety rating was downgraded by the FAA in May 2021 for non-compliance with minimum international safety standards. The top level “category one” status was restored in September of 2023 after, “the FAA provided expertise and resources via technical assistance… to resolve the safety issues that led to the downgrade,” the agency said at the time.
